Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus —dubbed as 2019-nCoV— scientists have been racing to develop the first vaccine to stem this epidemic. Several groups have started working on a vaccine shortly after the virus’s genetic sequence was shared in an online public database. Among the many, Inovio Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Moderna Inc. both claim to have a vaccine ready for testing in animals in one month. Both are using a newer vaccine technology based on specific DNA or messenger RNA (mRNA) sequences of the virus to which the body might strongly react to kindle a protective immune response. However, the vaccine will have to undergo multiple clinical trials before it hits the market that is predicted by this summer or end-of-the-year.
